What I like about my work

I enjoy the diversity of work that comes from our range of clients, from developers, central and local government, to iwi and environmental groups. It is rewarding to immerse myself in a project to understand not just the resource management issues, but also the overarching project management issues, and the broader social and political context of the project within the region. This helps me understand the importance and significance of the work that we do. I also enjoy hearings, as these   involve intensive and detailed planning and management, and are where all your arguments will be truly challenged.  Another interesting aspect of my work is examining legislative and policy issues that are pertinent for our clients, to help them understand the relevance of legislation and its application to their project, and also to work towards legislative change where necessary.

What I've done in the past

I've always worked in advocacy and representation, but in a number of different situations. As a student I was heavily involved in student politics, culminating in a year as president of the Otago University Students' Association. I worked in the environmental team of a large London law firm and gained valuable experience working on large development projects. Prior to Anderson Lloyd, I worked for the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment focussing on Maori environmental, and genetic modification issues. I think my broad range of experience in a number of different contexts helps me better understand the varied views of different stakeholders in the environmental management process.

My approach to working with my clients

I am most definitely a people person, and enjoy the personal contact I have with my clients. I make sure I am readily available as open communication is one of the most important aspects to lawyer-client relationships. I often have to explain complex technical and legal arguments to people who haven't specifically trained in these areas, so like to explain things in terms of first principles and put these in the broader context of the client's project.

What I enjoy at work

I have always wanted to work in environmental law, and enjoy both the principles and machinations of the area. I also have fantastic colleagues who are dynamic, supportive and entertaining. Working within such a cohesive and successful team makes coming to work easy.

What I enjoy outside of work

Adventures with my children, travelling, supporting New Zealand designers, running, drinking coffee, keeping up to date with national and international affairs, meals with family and friends.

What I enjoy about living in the South Island

After living in London, I love living next to the beach with only a 10 minute drive or 25 minute run to work. Central Otago is one of the most beautiful places on earth and is within easy reach for weekends and holidays. Both my and my husband's parents are here in Dunedin and we spend a lot of time together. I enjoy the easy to access activities that give Dunedin its gentle buzz.
