At work

If you're accepted, you'll spend some time getting to know us and finding your feet. We'll assign you a buddy to help you get to grips with our firm and how we work, as well as introducing you to the team you'll be working in and our various systems.

Graduates

Our graduate programme is made to be as flexible and individual as possible.
We believe strongly in teamwork and a team environment. All our authors are split into teams within specialist departments of the firm, enabling you to develop rapidly in a non-hierarchical setting while receiving guidance and encouragement from those around you.
Each team has a Team Leader, responsible for the team's strategic direction, resourcing and day to day decision making.

Teams contain a mix of junior, intermediate and senior solicitors. It's not unusual for work to be shared between teams, meaning there are ample opportunities for you to learn outside your specialist area. Partners within the team take active roles as leaders, mentors and supervisors and will have a keen interest in your development.
In order to find the team that's right for you, we'll look at your individual strengths and interests within the law, as well as your preferences. We'll also encourage you to review your areas of focus as your career progresses. After all, it's asking a little much we believe for you to make accurate long term career decisions in your first week!
Within the team itself, you'll be involved in everything from reviewing contracts and attending client interviews to preparing memos and opinions, drafting documents attending court. You'll work hard – but you'll learn a lot, and we'll do our best to make it a great journey.

Summer clerks

This programme, which starts in mid-November, begins with an induction course where you'll meet your fellow summer clerks and  the people you'll be working with. Induction also acts as your introduction to the  team in general and familarises you with our office procedures.
You'll also be assigned a buddy, who will be your guide and helper over your time with us. They will be your essential point of contact; someone you will always be able to approach, whenever you need them, regardless of how complex (or simple!) your question.

You'll be assigned to a variety of teams, giving you the chance to try various areas of law as you move around. Supervising partners in each team will help guide you as you attack the challenges thrown your way.
The work you do will be interesting and challenging, important and yes, on occasions, repetitive - drafting documents, research, meeting clients, working on trusts and conveyancing settlements.- but it will give you a realistic idea of the sort of work you can expect to be doing as you set out on your legal career.

Choosing us

There are plenty of real reasons for choosing us:

Work with acknowledged experts - Our partners are acknowledged leaders in their field. They're hands-on in the business and you'll have a lot more to do with them than you might at other firms. In fact, one on one partner time is one of the things most valued by our people.

Professional development and training - Our aim is to make you the best solicitor you can be. So you'll be fully involved in our training programme, including our weekly internal training programme, NZLS seminar report back sessions and team specific training. You'll also be strongly encouraged to attend all in-house training as well as receiving special training that meets your own needs.

Support during your Professionals - Most of our law clerks complete their profs during their time with us. We'll look to be as flexible as we can around timeframes in attending Professionals, and we'll work with you and your supervisor to get the best possible outcome.

Ongoing feedback - During your first two years with us, you'll be given ongoing feedback about your progress. This is done informally throughout the year, and also at 6 monthly appraisal meetings. These meetings provide dedicated time to discuss your progress and future training requirements with your supervising Partner, and the General Manager – Human Resources.

Strong Southern values - We are a firm with deep values and we believe in looking after
our staff. Our people value the up-skilling and training we provide, the benefits (including the pay) we offer, and the quality of work they are assigned.

Fast-track career opportunities - If you have the talent and the commitment, then we're not a firm to hold you back. In fact, a key reason we have the people we do is that they recognise that we will give them the chance to progress more quickly through our ranks.

A supportive culture - We'll give you work that will challenge you, but at the same time, you'll be welcomed and valued for your skills and we'll offer you the support and interaction that comes with being in our highly collaborative and innovative work environment.

A great package - In addition to stimulating work, regular reviews, constructive supervision, leading technology, internal and external professional development programmes, you'll receive a competitive salary that is formally reviewed every year. Most importantly, we make sure that hard work and results are recognised.
As part of our employment package we also offer:

  • an annual healthy living payment to encourage staff to participate in a health and well being related activity
  • an invitation to join the firm's medical insurance group scheme
  • reimbursement for eyesight tests
  • study and graduation leave
  • flexible parental leave arrangements
  • matrimonial leave
  • subsidised legal advice for staff and their families
  • mobile phones, car parks and access to the firm's computer system from home where required for certain staff.

Then there's the great social and sporting team opportunities, celebratory work team lunches and dinners, mid year and Christmas staff functions, Friday night drinks, fresh fruit in our staff cafeterias and participation at client and firm sponsored events – these are all part of the experience of working here.

Work life balance

We’re a firm that believes in life outside of the office as well. After hours, many of our partners and staff are active in sports and community organisations. Living in the South Island means you will have access to all that this great place has to offer – from skiing and fishing to great day trips and theatre, and everything in between. We work hard weekdays – but come the weekend, you can take all the time you need to explore all that the South has to offer.

Community commitment

We pride ourselves on our pro-bono work and on the other contributions we make in our communities.
Anderson Lloyd believes that providing not for profit service (or pro bono work) is an essential element of every solicitor's professional responsibility. Our people help with a number of different projects giving their time, expertise and leadership to assist on a range of health, community service, business, educational, environmental, heritage and recreational projects.
